Your Character: The Foundation of Success in and out of the Arena
Character is more than just a wordâitâs the foundation of who you are and who youâre becoming. Whether youâre working with your horse in the barn or competing in the show ring, your character determines how you handle challenges, treat others, and pursue your goals. đ
But hereâs the exciting part:
Character isnât something youâre born withâitâs something you build, one choice, one habit, and one value at a time. Just like training your horse, developing your character requires practice, patience, and dedication.
What Makes Up Your Character?
Think of your character as a puzzle made up of these five key pieces:
Values đ
These are the principles that guide your decisions.
Examples: Honesty, kindness, responsibility.
Reflection: What do you stand for, and how do your actions reflect it?
Beliefs đ§
The thoughts you hold about yourself and your abilities.
Reflection: What beliefs drive your actions in the barn, arena, and life?
Virtues đ
Traits that show moral excellence, like courage, perseverance, and humility.
Reflection: What virtues help you push through tough rides or support others?
Habits đ±
Small, consistent actions that shape who you are.
Reflection: What habits build your character, and which ones could you improve?
Choices đ
Every decision you make buildsâor breaksâyour character.
Reflection: Are your choices helping you grow into the rider and person you want to be?
Character in the Show Ring
In equestrian life, your character is tested every dayâwhether itâs how you care for your horse, support your peers, or handle challenges in the ring. Here are a few examples:
Courage: Entering a new class even when you feel nervous.
Patience: Giving your horse time to grow and learn.
Sportsmanship: Celebrating another riderâs success, even when you didnât place as expected.
How do these traits show up in your equestrian journey?
How to Build Strong Character
Building character isnât a one-time eventâitâs a daily practice. Here are three steps to help you strengthen your foundation:
Reflect on Who You Are Today:
Write down three words someone might use to describe you.
Then write three words youâd want them to use. Whatâs the gap, and how can you close it?
Define the Traits You Want to Build:
Choose one or two character traits to focus on (e.g., resilience, gratitude).
Take small actions daily to develop those traits.
Live Your Values in Action:
Make decisions that align with your valuesâeven when itâs hard.
Reflection Challenge đ
Write down three ways you can live your character in the barn or arena this week. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
âI will show gratitude by thanking my coach after every lesson.â
âI will practice patience by staying calm when my horse struggles to learn a new skill.â
âI will demonstrate sportsmanship by congratulating my competitors after every class.â
